Knowledge is Power!
Using the anti-immigration card, Republicans have become high-stakes gamblers, writes Joshua Hoyt, executive director ot the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. IMMIGRATION MATTERS regularly features the views of the nation’s leading immigrant rights advocates.

“So when President Bush and Senators McCain and Frist tried for a bi-partisan compromise to comprehensively fix our broken immigration system, Speaker Hastert and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) said no. Their decision to instead whip up anti-immigrant sentiments is a simple, cynical political calculation – in a bad year they need passion to turn out their political base.

The Speaker used the September 11 anniversary to excoriate immigrant terrorists, illegal immigrant gang members and Democratic leaders in almost the same breath. Ostensibly nonpartisan, taxpayer-funded “Get Tough’ House Hearings this summer were targeted to political swing districts like the 7th in Aurora, Colorado.”
