“While Latinas are 20 percent of all women having abortions, very few Spanish names are among a “We Had Abortions,” list just released by Ms. Magazine. This speaks to the social stigma abortion continues to have for Latinos, especially for those with religions that condemn the procedure. It is also indicative of a pro choice movement that has failed to engage Latinas en masse.

For most women, abortion is a difficult choice. They find themselves in the middle of hard situations, like being young and poor, single or victims of rape. The fear of rejection from their families or religious community isolates them.”
