“Ortega-Moore caused a stir with these words to a Washington Post reporter on how the public views blacks and Hispanic in Charlotte: “It used to be everybody here loved the Latinos.”

“They would say, `We like you more than the blacks.’ Now, we’re like the Big Bad Wolf.”

Ortega-Moore, executive director of the Latin American Coalition, has a history of building bridges between races in the community. Following critical calls she received — none, she said, from Charlotte — Ortega-Moore explained what she meant.”
