Honoring a salsa shaker – Johnny Pacheco

“Joe Conzo, Latin music historian and close friend of the late Tito Puente, has always said musicians like Puente were amused by the term “salsa.”

“What does it mean?” asks Conzo. “What kind of music is ‘salsa’? Merengue, cumbia, those are styles of music. ‘Salsa’ means ‘sauce,’ just a lot of things all stirred together.”

Of course, Conzo agrees, you can make wonderful dishes by stirring a lot of things together, and in the salsa world, Johnny Pacheco has always been a man with the magic spoon.”
