“When Alonzo Pena assumes his post as head of immigration enforcement in Arizona on Tuesday, he will be parachuting into the middle of the nation’s busiest human smuggling corridor and into a political tempest.

Some of Pena’s weighty duties will include battling sophisticated smuggling networks and violent gangs that hold immigrants for ransom, and carrying out the government’s new effort to crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.”
