“Raul Diaz remembers the velvet rug that hung on the wall of his parent’s home in Toppenish when he was growing up, with images of John and Robert Kennedy flanking the Virgin of Guadalupe and the White House in the background.

“Most Hispanic homes had them in the ’60s and ’70s,” said Diaz.

His father was an illegal immigrant who finally received a green card he renewed every year until he died at age 89. He never became a U.S. citizen because he couldn’t read or write, but he proudly thought of himself as an American and insisted on being buried here, Diaz recalled.”
