“I had to start in playing salsa and mariachi music,” says guitarist and composer Alfredo Muro. “I was even wearing my charro.” He laughs, remembering the Mexican suit with buttons and big hat. But the Peruvian immigrant, who arrived speaking little English, has no regrets.
“I’ve thought many times, if I were still in Peru, how difficult would be my life,” says Muro, who came to Portland in 1989, at the height of Peru’s economic and guerrilla crisis. Though he misses the world he left behind, the move has allowed him to become the artist he always wanted to be.”
