“Sen. Edward Kennedy warned against “the politics of negativism and darkness . . . we see on the floor of the U.S. Senate” and suggested a process of “earned legalization” for law-abiding immigrants who are dedicated to the community, after he received the New Bostonian Leadership Award last night for his commitment to immigration reform.

Presented by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino’s Office of New Bostonians, Kennedy was awarded because of his bipartisan efforts with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Kennedy said immigration laws are not only a question of national security, but also “a moral issue,” calling for a system that would allow immigrants to take jobs citizens are not taking, without being exploited and underpaid. “
