TROUPE EXPLORES RACE, MIGRATION THROUGH 1977 WORK

“The Villas first come to the United States in 1915, searching for a better life. But during the Depression, the family gets torn apart. The little boy Sammy remains in Los Angeles, while his parents are forced to return to Mexico, and he eventually grows up to become an INS agent. One day la migra rounds up his long-lost mother in a raid and Sammy must confront where he came from.

The 1977 play “La Victima” charts the migration of Mexican-Americans in the 20th century through the tale of the Villa family. A bilingual text with dialogue in Spanish and English, “La Victima” has become a classic of Chicano theater, lauded for its powerful agit-prop techniques and corrido ballads.”
