“In 2008, during the next Presidential election, Hispanics will have the power to influence 268 electoral votes,” said Henry Flores, the dean of Graduate School at St. Mary’s University. “It only takes 270 electoral votes to win.”

“Flores, who is an expert on the Voting Rights Act, said the power for Hispanics does not come solely from increasing numbers.

“The education level among these new voters is increasing and in some cities you are getting a critical mass of new, young students who are becoming leaders,” he said. “They are driving the issues and they are raising questions.”"
