A look back reflects how little has changed in a decade except the growing presence of Latinos throughout the country.

“The March for Latino Unity on Oct. 12, 1996, was the first national grassroots effort by Latinos to focus attention on their issues. Although the second largest minority group in the land, their numbers were quickly growing and demographers were predicting their eventual rise to the largest minority group.

The hot button issues of 1996 were similar to those of 2006. Proposition 187 in California denied public education and health care to the undocumented and evoked much dissent and protest by Latino activists. Congress passed a bill doubling the size of the Border Patrol, President Clinton increased raids on factories and antiterrorist legislation was enacted to speed up deportation of the undocumented.”
