Minority actors in pivotal roles are still scarce – Arizona

“David Ira Goldstein, artistic director of Arizona Theatre Company, the state’s largest performing arts organization, says we’ve come a long way in the last 15 years he’s been with the company. Thirty percent to 40 percent of those he’s hired since, he says, have been people of color. But he still remembers his first production with ATC, an adaptation of “The Marriage of Figaro” called “One Crazy Day” at Phoenix’s Herberger Theater Center.

“Half the cast was Latino,” Goldstein says. “In the lobby, I heard someone say, “If I want to see something like that, I’ll talk to my gardener.’ “
