Immigrants fill classrooms – North Carolina (ESL classrooms that is)

“In Statesville, “Se habla Espanol” signs are on some stores along downtown’s Broad Street. The town has a population of 23,000. At Mitchell Community College, flags representing the 32 countries of the students hang from the ceilings in classrooms and the hall. Nearly 800 immigrants are enrolled, and the numbers have grown every year.

Now 15 instructors work with adult immigrants, up from two 10 years ago. “If they would give me this building, I would fill it,” said Leslie Foster-Davidson, who directs the adult English as a Second Language program. “We have seen a huge increase in the number of students who want classes in citizenship.”"
