“While the public image of Medal of Honor recipient Roy Benavidez is what one might expect of a war hero _ the silent, stoic military man _ his children paint a portrait of a more complex person.

“Actually, he was the biggest teddy bear in life. My friends would call the house, and he would answer and make them laugh. They’d tell me, ‘Everyone thinks he’s so mean, but he’s really so funny,’” his daughter Yvonne Garcia said.”
