Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina threw the Latin music industry into a tailspin: A small, independent artist from Puerto Rico broke through the old guard to become Latin America’s premier artist. Don Francisco, an Ed Sullivan-type TV veteran, even danced to his music on his Saturday-night show.
But the Latin Grammy nominations, which were announced Tuesday, ignored this sea change. Veteran artists such as Ricardo Arjona, Chayanne and Ricardo Montaner each got nods in the general categories. (Calle 13 was the only urban group among them.)”
