Knowledge is Power!
Tomas,
I am a 35-year old (white) high school teacher and boys soccer coach in Cayce, South Carolina. I have great interest in the growing Hispanic/Latino culture and have worked to bridge my communication and cultural gap with our fastest growing ethnic group in Lexington County. I have more Hispanic students this semester than ever before and genuinely love their presence and enthusiasm for the public school system.
Most of the Hispanic kids that I have love to learn, are extremely obedient, and have a “purpose” that is not seen in most American students. I am at a huge disadvantage communicating with my students as I never took Spanish in HS or college, but did take a “crash-course” offered by the school district last fall and often find myself learning as much from my Latino-students as probably what I teach them!
They are simply great people and want an opportunity. I am not a “do-gooder” and want publicity, but I think that it should be known from an average teacher in an average area, that my Hispanic students are some of my top reasons for staying in the education profession.
Thanks for your forum. I’ve bookmarked it and will visit regularly.
