“This is a safe vote, a perfectly devised, make-everybody-happy election year plan,” said University of Connecticut pollster Christopher Barnes.

“Legislators talked tough on illegal immigration Thursday, with the Senate debating construction of a 700-mile fence on the Mexican border and the House passing three measures targeting those who sneak into the country.

But the most difficult issue - what to do about the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants who now live in the United States - won’t be addressed before Congress adjourns for the November election.”
