Immigrants urged to use clinics, not hospital ERs – New York City

“The city has dozens of child health care clinics spread out in all five boroughs. But not enough parents – especially immigrant parents – are using them.

“People have come to believe that if they are uninsured, the place they go for help is the emergency room,” City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said yesterday outside the Melrose Child Health Center in the Bronx.

On top of that is the mistaken fear that their information will be turned over to immigration authorities.”
