“The U.S. House approved three bills Thursday intended to curb illegal immigration, taking a piecemeal approach to a problem it has been unable to resolve in a comprehensive manner.

The legislation calls for criminalization of tunneling into the United States and increased penalties for gang activity and smuggling of immigrants into the country. The bills would also accelerate deportation of undocumented aliens and give state and local police power to enforce federal immigration laws. “
