South Texas College’s Technology Center will play host to Global Insight’s (formerly CIEMEX-WEFA) LVII Maquiladora Industry Outlook Conference on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Experts from Global Insight, which specializes in forecasting the Mexican economy, will present their current assessments of the developments and trends of the maquiladora industry in Mexico. They will also discuss their views regarding the outlook for the Mexican, U.S., and world economies and their impact on the maquiladora industry.
Mario Reyna, division dean of Business, Math, Science and Technology for South Texas College, will be giving the luncheon address, discussing how education has changed the face of the economy in Hidalgo and Starr counties. He will highlight the socioeconomic impact of education, future opportunities for workforce training and issues surrounding NAFTA.
In addition to providing macroeconomic and industry perspectives on this sector of the economy, the event will include a panel of recognized maquiladora industry experts who will discuss recent and relevant topics. The panel will include senior executives from Grupo Rio San Juan (AMPIP), The MRB Group, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas-El Paso, International Distribution & Logistics, Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, Daniel B. Hastings, Inc., and the McAllen Economic Development Corporation.
“We are very excited to be hosting this event because, as an institution of higher education, part of our mission is to provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas and information that will impact the lives of the citizens of Hidalgo and Starr counties,” said Mario Reyna. “It is also going to be a wonderful education event because it gives us a chance to show off our wonderful new facilities and showcase the work of students who are training for leadership roles in the maquiladora industry.”
The Greater McAllen Alliance is the sponsor of the event in conjunction with co-sponsors Daniel B. Hastings, Inc., International Distribution & Logistics, Coldwell Banker and the International Bank of Commerce.
