Immigrants complain of Delaware town’s crackdown on out-of-state tags

Cruz Rodriguez, vice president of the Hispanic advocacy group Voices without Borders, said he believes the law is racially motivated.

“A new law, under which Elsmere police are targeting vehicles with out-of-state tags, amounts to racial profiling, according to critics.

State law requires residents to register their vehicles within 60 days, but it is typically enforced only when accompanied by a traffic violation. The new Elsmere ordinance allows police to ticket a car parked on a public street. Police are aided by an electronic database which tracks which vehicles have been in the town for 60 days or more”
