“In the wake of a nationwide debate fueled by a bill that aimed to tighten immigration laws, government agencies are now reporting an increase in the number of foreigners applying for United States citizenship.

“We have just recently seen a big uptick,” said Shawn Saucier, a spokesperson for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of Homeland Security. “Whether it’s an historical uptick has yet to be seen.”"
