The political season is in full swing, so it’s time to harvest what was sowed over the summer. Why else would politicians repeat a vote, if not to slam their money on the table when they place their bet?

“First, summer is over, and so is the protracted political theater of the congressional immigration public hearings. The hearings were a good cover that gave congressional incumbents the opportunity to travel and be seen while stalling a vote on a bill that could affect their chances for re-election. It is impossible for a vote on an immigration bill ”” any immigration bill ”” to be organized and held before the November election.

At the same time, it gave some politicians an opportunity to hammer at this year’s political wedge. Whether the immigration wedge will hold is yet to be seen because the war in Iraq seems to be taking up more of the public’s attention.”
