” Latinas helping Latinas
In February 1989, Rodriguez called 12 women she knew and invited them to help create a nonprofit organization to improve the quality of life for all Latinas in Northern New Mexico. Before long, the organizers joined MANA, a national Latina organization founded in 1974 as the “Mexican American National Association.” (The group in 1994 modified its name to include the word “Latina” to emphasize the diversity of its membership.)
“That’s how MANA del Norte was created,” Rodriguez said. “We’re there for young Latina girls, working moms. We’re here for support and also to help people in need, whether it is through scholarships for school or any financial issues that may arise.” “
