“The news Marí Juarez had awaited for more than a year came last Tuesday, delivered by three grim-faced police officers who knocked on her door and asked to come in.

“Where is he?” Juarez asked the officers, referring to her younger brother, Anber G. Juarez-Sanchez, who had been missing since August 2005. “Is he all right?”

The news was bad, one of the officers said, the kind police hate to deliver. Her brother had been killed, Juarez said the officers told her, apparently by members of Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, a violent Latino gang.”
