Knowledge is Power!

“Three women stood Sept. 1 at the footsteps of the altar at St. Mary Parish in Minooka””one English-speaking, one Spanish-speaking and one bilingual. Calling themselves “Las Hermanas,” the Spanish word meaning “the sisters,” the women agreed they have become members of a sisterhood at the Grundy County parish that crosses cultural barriers and has become a resource for an enlightened exchange.

Jean Tyrell””who is slowly learning to speak Spanish””said about three years ago she joined together with Alicia Diaz, a bilingual parishioner, to invite other parishioners for fellowship as well as language exchange, relying on a handful of English as a Second Language workbooks. The weekly meetings in the church’s basement offer English-speaking individuals the opportunity to learn some Spanish and vice versa.”
