With illegal immigration law on hold, Hazleton needs more than new words - Pennsylvania

“Hazleton has put its controversial illegal immigration ordinance on hold. The Luzerne County city had been sued in federal court by the ACLU and Latino organizations who claimed the law was unconstitutional, unenforceable and likely to cause discrimination.

Instead of arguing the merits of the ordinance or the challenge in court, however, Mayor Louis Barletta agreed to delay enforcing it as scheduled next week. While the challengers considered the agreement a victory of sorts, Mayor Barletta put a different spin on things. ”We’re not enforcing it because we are in the midst of amending it,” he said. ”The amended ordinance will be even stronger and more defensible.””
