Blog for America: Latino Education
Tagged: blog, HIV, parents, student, teacher“In a capitalist society those who can produce and then own the means of production advance forward, while the rest become spokes of the wheel. Acknowledging the possibility of inheritance or winning the lottery, one of the firm paths to economic success and freedom has been education. Education is key to gaining success, improving production and distribution, independence, access and to a secure legacy.
But not all education systems are created alike. In Los Angeles, the average classroom size is 15% larger than allowed by state and federal standards. Schools routinely are riddled with gang violence and drugs. The worst schools, by far, are in predominantly Latino neighborhoods such as Pico-Union and West Lake. The easy targets for Administrators, Parents and Federal Officials are teachers. Teachers today are not mere educators, but counselors, surrogate parents, and even wardens. How can a teacher instruct a foreign born student to write lucid and articulate prose while dodging drive-by shootings and drug dealers?”
