“But Lt. Ernesto Olivares already has extended himself far beyond the arena of law enforcement. He sits on the boards of Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and the Sonoma County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and formerly served on the county Commission on Human Rights.

Now Olivares, 48, the son of a Central Valley farmworker, will further extend himself, seeking to coordinate an array of community agencies and volunteers. Together those involved will try to reduce gang violence and steer at-risk youths toward education and careers.
