Latino players face more than homesickness

God, he says, is with him, but the others are thousands of miles away in the Dominican Republic.

He badly wants to make the major leagues, mostly for his mother, a widow after his father died of throat cancer several years ago. Two of his siblings work in stores, and a third is a fisherman, he said. Gervacio, the youngest, knows that as a professional baseball player he has the chance to help the most financially.”
