A Resource with a Reassuring Message for Latino Families: Reading to your babies in Spanish will help them become A+ students in English – and every subject!

Tagged: , , ,

“Latino families across America want their children to excel in school and prosper in life. Fortunately, every Spanish-speaking parent, regardless of education level, occupation, or immigrant status, can give their little ones an edge on academic success. All it takes is setting aside a few minutes each day for the pleasure of reading aloud – nursery rhymes, storybooks, even El Diario – in their native language.

“When children start school with the advantage of having parents and grandparents who talk and read to them, they learn how to read easily in Spanish and then easily “transition’ into English reading,” notes Barbara Weston Ramirez, a Reading Recovery specialist who has taught hundreds of first-graders from homes where only Spanish is spoken. In BABY READ-ALOUD BASICS: Fun and Interactive Ways to Help Your Little One Discover the World of Words (AMACOM Books), coauthored with Reading Recovery specialist Caroline J. Blakemore, she urges and empowers all parents to nourish their baby’s brain by establishing a read-aloud routine, starting from day one. “
