“Many other Hispanics have made similar decisions in recent years. Between 2000 and 2005, the city of Grand Rapids saw a 25 percent increase in the number of Hispanics, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The rise continues the explosive growth of a community that has almost quadrupled since the 1990 Census, going from 8,447 to 32,368 Hispanics in the city.
Hispanics now make up 16.7 percent of the city’s population and 8.9 percent of Kent County’s. In Ottawa County, the Hispanic population grew by about 17 percent to total 7.6 percent of the county population. Nationally, the number of immigrants living in American households increased 16 percent the last five years, according to the Census Bureau’s 2005 American Community Survey.”
