Chican@ Art Magazine: Overcoming My Fear of Graffiti

Tagged: , ,

“I’ve always prided myself on being artistically open-minded. Even that time when I actually came face to face with the one ambiguous painting you always hear about, the giant white canvas with the imposing red dot, even then, I tried to appreciate its symmetry, and tried to read some kind of political statement in it. However, despite all of my attempts at open-mindedness, and as much as I hate to admit this, I was never really open-minded to graffiti. Perhaps it’s rooted in my small town background, but I always associated graffiti with gangs, drugs, and bad parts of big cities that you don’t want to be in late at night. I carried this very ignorant fear with me for most of my life; that is, until I was fortunate enough to attend San Antonio’s CAM Film Slam on July 14, 2006. “
