“Jerome Mueller, a very dear relative of mine, invited me to a family reunion this past weekend. I decided to have my aunt Patricia, who is visiting from Mexico, join me as well. About 30 people took part in the family reunion ”” most of whom are English-speaking people ”” and three Hispanics, including myself.

As Jerome began to talk about his greatest passions, which include his German ancestry, his beautiful garden and fishing on Lake Michigan, I could see Aunt Patty totally frustrated because she was unable to speak the language. As I asked her about her feelings, she said, “I would love to be able to express to Jerome the common interest that I share with him, also to ask him more about his life.” It made her feel like she was separated from the reunion.”
