“Citing health reasons, longtime Richmond City Councilman John Marquez, the first Latino to serve on the council, has decided not to run for mayor.

Marquez, whose current term expires in 2008, had not yet filed candidacy papers with the city clerk, but he had publicly announced his intention to run. Marquez underwent surgery for colon cancer in late May. While his recovery has been strong, he and his family decided it would not be wise to wage a highly competitive campaign considering his health condition.”
