“Middlesex County had the 23rd-largest population of Hispanics in the nation by July 2005, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released yesterday.

Only counties with a population of 1 million or more were listed in the updated estimates, which said Middlesex had 75,062 residents identifying themselves as Hispanic, and Massachusetts with 253,365 Hispanic residents of a total population of 6,398,743.

The Hispanic population also is growing rapidly in Bristol and Plymouth counties. “
