Knowledge is Power!

“This week the Sentinel reported state tourism honchos are wooing the minority travel dollar to boost languid tourism growth. In line with that marketing thrust, at Walt Disney World it’s hi-ho, hi-ho and off to Spanish classes that Cinderella and Snow White soon may go.

Although the marketing blitz also targets blacks, don’t bet on Disney (I pray) enrolling characters in Ebonics courses and later trotting out MC Mickey M. to drop Disney-fied hip-hop salutations — “F’shizzle my n’izzle. It’s your small world, I’m just trying to break me off some cheddar.”

The reality is that Latinos are the target, and rightly so, given Hispanic domestic travel is growing at 10 times the rate of total U.S. travel and five times that of blacks. So, on one hand, Disney’s quest to broaden its mundo pequeno by imagineering a culturally simpatico experience for Latinos is enlightened self-interest given that Hispanics will command more than $900 billion in buying clout by 2009.”
