“One of those neighborhoods, Colonia Libertad, took part in the annual event by hosting a potluck for the residents of the 48-unit housing complex near Saddle Club Street and Lancaster Drive SE. The housing development opened in May 2005 and also hosted a Night Out last year.

“Our goal is to build a community,” Colonia Libertad community organizer Jaime Arredondo said. “As far as I know, it is not celebrated by the Latino community. It’s good to start up a tradition.”

Sgt. Russ Isham and community-relations analyst íngela Marí Hedrick, both of the Salem Police Department, and McGruff the Crime Dog stopped by the farmworker housing development to promote building relationships with neighbors and the police.”
