As a local family’s frozen-fruit-bar company’s success proves, there’s a market for guava, mango, bubble gum, rice, hibiscus, cucumber-chile and a rainbow of others, too.

Jose Mendoza and Jesus Ramos, the two cousins who own Sunnyside’s Paleteria la Nortena, work 16-hour days in the summer, pumping out between 6,000 and 7,000 Mexican style “paletas” per day, but still they can’t keep up with demand for the frozen treats.”
