“Small-town USA used to be considered places of refuge for people trying to escape the madhouse of city living. For Anglo white Americans, small towns were equated with friendly faces, unlocked doors and always someone available to lend a helping hand.

The flipside to the fairytale illusion was for people of color who were strangers, small-town USA was a place where unfriendly stares, disapproving frowns, Ku Klux Klan threats and the sudden click of locked doors greeted a people who were considered strange as much as strangers because of the color of their skin or their accents.”
