“On a recent breezy summer night, Carlos Lugo and a small band of volunteers hit the streets of southeast Yakima armed with political pamphlets, voter lists, bottled water and enough idealism to make a thousand cynics shrink in shame.

“Carlos, we don’t have any campaign material for Cantwell in Spanish,” says Elisa Miranda, one of three volunteers, referring to U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, the Democrat seeking re-election.”
