“Longview High School needs at least three more Spanish teachers before school starts, and the district is one of several throughout Region VII that are competing for the sparse educators.

“Spanish and bilingual teachers are at the forefront right now,” said John Abbott, assistant director of instruction services for Region VII. “In the big picture, there’s a shortage everywhere.”

At Longview High School, Principal Milton Wallace said about 885 of the 2,100 students have expressed interest in taking a Spanish class in the fall. Last week, though, Wallace said not all students who want to take Spanish will be able to, especially since the high school employs only two Spanish teachers.”
