“More and more Mexican nationals have been arriving in the Rio Grande Valley in recent years, likely because of economic development here, a local consular official said.
“It’s grown with the economic activity in the Valley,” said Hector Aguilar Meza, vice consul in Brownsville. “The idea spreads that there are more jobs, and for the consulate, that means that you’re doing more with less.”
Aguilar has been working at the Brownsville consulate for the past three years, and he said during that time, work at the consulate has intensified with the growing population. While the consulate may have issued five passports in one day before, up to 20 a day may be issued now, he said.”
