“These past few months, a renewed and virulent front against so-called “illegal immigrants” has formed across the country. Right-wing reactionaries are once again calling for “English Only” legislation, proposing the militaristic division of the United States from Mexico, and making new efforts to dehumanize workers without documents.

This face of anti-Latino, anti-Hispanic xenophobia is nothing new. Even here in Fort Collins, racism toward Spanish speakers has a long and deep history. Even as recently as the 1960s, storefront signs in some Fort Collins businesses declared “Mexicans and dogs not allowed.” The difference between the shameless xenophobia of previous decades and current, even publicly acceptable racism is that now, post-9/11, many try to mask it as a matter of “national security and unity.” But it’s easy to see through this shroud.”
