“The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $246,800 grant to the city’s public schools that will bring local Puerto Rican artists into classrooms to work with teachers and students.

The school district’s “Explorations in Puerto Rican Culture” project seeks to create a culturally sensitive curriculum that promotes student and parental involvement.

More than 50 percent of the city’s student population is Latino. The majority of that group is of Puerto Rican descent.”
