“It is called Mt. Cristo Rey and from its peak can be seen Texas, New Mexico and the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Considered a sanctuary,refuge and holy ground to the more than 30,000 pilgrims who climb the gravelly path to pray before the limestone statue of Christ the King since it was dedicated in 1940, Mt. Cristo Rey is seen as a protector of this border region.

According to the El Paso Community College Local History Project web site, The statue stands on top of a nine-foot base in front of a 33 1/2-foot cross. The entire monument stands 42 1/2 feet high. “
