“Rodriguez wondered if he could keep his Cuban heritage alive in a region where many wrongly assume Hispanic means Mexican.

More than 12% of Hispanics in Fresno, Tulare and Madera counties are not of Mexican descent. They include Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Central Americans and South Americans.

They say they have to work harder to maintain their cultural ties because they’re a minority within the Central Valley’s fast-growing Hispanic population. Their main struggle: finding the food and music of their roots.”
