Petitions won’t have Spanish in Monterey County, California

“Challenges to two petition drives earlier this year over the lack of Spanish translations won’t stop opponents of a Monterey city building from circulating petitions only in English.

Supporters of Let the Voters Decide, a grassroots organization that wants the decision on building a 35,000-square-foot public service center near Colton Hall to be decided by the public, said they don’t expect their referendum will be nullified because their petitions have not been circulated in Spanish.

Mike Dawson, the group’s spokesman, cited time constraints and potential confusion in converting the document into Spanish.”
