“The war stories Tony Mata heard growing up in the 1930s and ’40s were unlike those of most American kids.
His father, Feliciano Mata, was born June 9, 1870, in Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato. He claimed to have been an assassin for the first Pancho Villa, a bandit named Francisco “Pancho” Villa who defended peasants against Mexico’s ruling elite.
“In 1903 when (Francisco) Villa died, my father met Doroteo Arango Arambula, who took Villa’s name and continued his mission,” Tony Mata said.”
