“Armando Perez — better known to hip-hop fans as Pitbull — grew up listening to Miami bass music, hip-hop, freestyle and Spanish music.

While other Latino hip-hop artists ignored their roots and sang only in English, the Miami rapper took a chance by injecting Spanish into his songs.

“My Cuban background has definitely affected my music,” Pitbull said during a telephone interview from Newark, N.J. “Salsa has had a huge influence on me. I grew up listening to artists like the late Celia Cruz.”"
